tires or converter first?

Default tires or converter first?

I am looking at getting a set of 17x9's w/ some 275/40/17 ET Street radials AND a 3200 PI converter. Which should I get first? I know that I can still get more out of the launch on the stock converter on tires and the converter on street tires will really do me no good. I think I have my mind made up, but I just want some other opinions. Thanks!

I would get the converter first. Getting the converter first forces you to realize that you will need more tire where as getting the tires first doesn't really provide you with much gain any way you look at it. Plus a converter with stock tires can be fun on the street hehehe.

Though...I would want something around 4000 rpm stall for my street car!

id go with a converter first too, if you buy the tires first then by the time you have enough saved up for the converter your only gunna need tires again!

id go no smaller than 3500

I was thinking about going with a loose converter, I just didn't know how loose.

Peak torque on our 05/06 stangs is 4500 rpm. For maximum performance you want a converter approximately 500 rpm blow peak torque. Go with a 4000 stall for maximum performance. PI makes a 3600(#7 pump) which would be a good one for our cars. As you add more torque that 3600 might become a 4000.

But to answer your original question, you will probably need sticky tires if you get the converter first. Particularly in first gear. But even on radials from a roll at any speed it is a lot more fun than the factory converter. Mine falls on it face on the 3-4 shift. That wouldn't happen with the right converter.

Right!

With the lockup feature of these newer transmissions there really isn't a big advantage to not using a larger stall. I you will need to footbrake this thing to at least 3500 to get it to leave somewhat well, and higher if you really want to have impressive numbers IMO.
