I would just get another gauge and see....better safe than sorry....I've seen a car that hurt some parts because of a "faulty" gauge...
Where are you located??? I have an extra one you can use to test with if you are local...

Take the bottle out of the car and weigh it. The weight of the bottle when it's full will be engraved on the bottle or on the label. If the bottle is at full weight then you know you have a bad gauge. If the bottleis underweight then you know your gauge is ok.
