Look at Comp, VT, Crower, and JDM. Talk to the manufacturers and tell them your current setup and what you are looking for, thay will get you squared away.

you really need to have a goal to pick a cam. It depends on your other supporting mods as well. I am finding that the cams I have may not be the best for my setup... but good for others. Alot of people are having great luck with VT's cams on unported heads. There is a guy on stangnet with VT stage 1's and bolt ons at almost 300 RWHP, stock heads. Just depends on your goals and future plans.

what supporting mods are usually needed on a 4.6 auto before a cam buildup? full exhaust, but what after that?

Well what im getting ready to do is put some longtube headers on, 4:10 gears, underdrive pulleys. For right now , and the cams of course. My Car is a AT and im looking for a pretty good thump out of the cam.

Bill Putnam went 11.9x on stock heads with VT Stage 1 cams.

In an auto 2V I would get a converter, a valve body, 4.10s, lontubes, and then get the cams based on my goals after that.

A buddy of mine is running consistent 12.60s in a 2V auto with said mods and Patriot stg. 2 heads.
