Friends Stock Rear Took A Dump

Aparently the 8.8" is no better than the GM 10 bolt. After 2 weekends of racing and some badass launches..netting a best of 1.80 60' and a 14.02... the rear just gave up. all the spider gears were screwed, the retention pin in the center...bent, axles...twisted. its in the process of having an eaton posi and moser 31 spline axles and rear end girdle put in. hopefully theyll take the abuse. hell this is even on the stock clutch, i honestly thought that the clutch would go first.. :drive: :chug:

The stock carriers are not that good.. I kept on braking the spider gears after about 3 track outings. Never twisted a stock axle but they aren't that great either.. My current setup is Moser 31 spline axles, Eaton differential, FRPP 4.10 gears, and, Trickflow girdle.. I also have my axle tubes welded up and cross braces welded to keep the rearend from flexing under hard launches like I do.. My best 60ft to date is a 1.49, so I think your friend will be fine..

I raced all last year on a stock rear ( other than 4.10's and a girdle) on ET Streets and had no problems. No banzai rev limiter clutch drop launches mind you, but a little slip at 4500 netted 1.7's and a intact rear

I'm gonna test my luck with a 31 spline truck trac loc, we'll see how that holds up. If/when that breaks, I'll pop in the Eaton -- been very impressed with them (have one in my GM 12 bolt)

The 8.8 is LIGHT YEARS better than a 7.5 10 bolt. You can actually build an 8.8, good luck with a 7.5 and stick car. I have never seen a 7.5 run 5's in the 1/8 on the back bumper either.

The stock axles are horrible and seem to be worse on the Mach 1's? The stock trac lok will go but can be rebuilt with extra clutches and hold quite a bit. My buddy's 03 Cobra has a repacked trac lok and has done ALOT of 1.5 60 ft's without an issue.

^^^^^ I will second that

Not telling you anything you don't already know but getting the info out to others that dont know...

That Ford 31sp truck trac-lok will go 9's on a non-tbrake car all day (IMO/IME). You might need to repack it now and but it's a hell of a lot better than an Auburn which breaks more often and isn't self-rebuildable. Considering they can be had for ~$80-100, the the Ford 31sp truck unit is the way to go for any street car that sees trips to the track.

update: 13.85 w/ a 1.86 short time on the new rear. down, down down, it goes..:)

If you have an auto I don't think you will have a problem with the 31 spline truck carrier for Ford but the 5 speed seem to shock the rear alot harder then the autos, that is why I broke the spider gears all the time... I had the extra clutch packs and rebuilt my own carriers, but I am hell on parts. I drive my car at the track with no worries at all, I push it hard on every launch at over 6K rpm launchs.. I'm just telling him from my own experiances..
