Friends Stock Rear Took A Dump
Aparently the 8.8" is no better than the GM 10 bolt. After 2 weekends of racing and some badass launches..netting a best of 1.80 60' and a 14.02... the rear just gave up. all the spider gears were screwed, the retention pin in the center...bent, axles...twisted. its in the process of having an eaton posi and moser 31 spline axles and rear end girdle put in. hopefully theyll take the abuse. hell this is even on the stock clutch, i honestly thought that the clutch would go first.. :drive: :chug:

I raced all last year on a stock rear ( other than 4.10's and a girdle) on ET Streets and had no problems. No banzai rev limiter clutch drop launches mind you, but a little slip at 4500 netted 1.7's and a intact rear

I'm gonna test my luck with a 31 spline truck trac loc, we'll see how that holds up. If/when that breaks, I'll pop in the Eaton -- been very impressed with them (have one in my GM 12 bolt)
|
The 8.8 is LIGHT YEARS better than a 7.5 10 bolt. You can actually build an 8.8, good luck with a 7.5 and stick car. I have never seen a 7.5 run 5's in the 1/8 on the back bumper either.
The stock axles are horrible and seem to be worse on the Mach 1's? The stock trac lok will go but can be rebuilt with extra clutches and hold quite a bit. My buddy's 03 Cobra has a repacked trac lok and has done ALOT of 1.5 60 ft's without an issue. |
^^^^^ I will second that

That Ford 31sp truck trac-lok will go 9's on a non-tbrake car all day (IMO/IME). You might need to repack it now and but it's a hell of a lot better than an Auburn which breaks more often and isn't self-rebuildable. Considering they can be had for ~$80-100, the the Ford 31sp truck unit is the way to go for any street car that sees trips to the track. |
update: 13.85 w/ a 1.86 short time on the new rear. down, down down, it goes..:)
|
Awesome, now go and get a 13 even!!

That's where I'm thinking I'll be OK with the Ford T-loc... I'm just an automatic w/ a 3.06 first gear and a 3200 Vigilante converter :secret2:

The True Trac seems to be the next big thing, I know a couple people running them in F-Bodys, be interesting to see how they hold up.

i cant even figure out how gm thought that rear would actually make it. The 6-speed cars with a hard clutch dump are break the rear end and they are completely stock.
|
The GM 10 bolt isn't THAT weak, if driven properly. I finally broke mine after over a year of running 4.10's in a 3650 lb. car in the 11's, dropping the clutch at 4500 to 5500 .. Its kinda like the T5 3rd gear -- treat it right, and it'll handle quite a bit more power than it was designed for.
Still no match for the 8.8 though :D |
the only time I have seen the 7.5 last when doing clutch dumps is having a slipping clutch.
|
... or the user controlling the shock off the line. I'd load the gears by holding the clutch ever so slightly against the friction point while waiting for the lights to come down, and I wouldn't just side-step the pedal. A little finesse goes a long way -- or I just got really lucky
|
Thats not really "dumping the clutch" then. ;) You gotta let er ripppp! :)
|
I used to slip the clutch off the line in my 94 Z28 but the night I decided to try dumping the clutch, it wasnt hooking but it damn sure broke, even had an LPW Support Cover on it. The spider gears and cross pin broke, blew everything in there. Rebuilt it with an Eaton Posi, Strange Gears and added the stud kit and it never broke but I was never able to really lean on it off the line. :(
|
Well, now that I have a SPEC Stage 4 "ankle liberator" clutch, a Denny's driveshaft, and 4.11's in the 12 bolt, I've been letting it absolutely drop at 6500 :D Haven't broke anything yet!
I AM worried about that SPEC clutch though, its started making noise when its cold. |
I have a spec and I absolutely love it. I drop the hammer at 7000rpms and it still chrips 4th w/ 26x10's. Of course I don't have the T-loc in the back though. My rear goes clickety click when I turn. ;) -Mark
|
The rear end on my 2000 trans am did the whole clickety click whenever I turned left. It was completely stock with 15000 miles and it still did it. Good old weak 7.5!!
