Max Horsepower with a stock bottom end 4.6?

What's the most horsepower ever achieved by a stock bottom end 4.6 soch mustang with forced induction (turbo/sc)?

it's just not the power you make, but the condition of your bottom end and the quality of you're tune.

On that note if everything was perfect, in a perfect world, the rod's are going ti give out at around 450 wheel hp, and the cast crank is good to around 600 wheel horsepower. More is possible but it is severely damaging to your stock block, and will kill the longevity of your engine.

It also depends on year of the car. The 2003-2004 cobra can handle up to 600 horsepower before the pistons will take a dump.

Top fuel is right on if its a pre 2003 4.6 L motor.

The stock SOHC 4.6L motors start to have problems just above 400 RWHP. The piston ring lands seem to be the first to go.

He isn't talking about a DOHC (cobra) motor, which has a different bottom end than the SOHC (GT) engine.

Any cobra engine is going to be able to handle a lot more power than the GT counterpart, due in large to their 4 bolt mains, and forged crankshaft.

Yeah I missed the sohc part. Sorry :bang: :twak:

Cranks don't matter. Both will not be the cause of engine failure below 600hp. The rods and pistons are the same from 96-01 for both 2v and 4v. Powered rods and hypereutectic pistons will fail around 450. Of course there are a few exceptions to the rule. But the ones that I know of already failed. Aka Brian Bradford's stock bottom end 4v. 603rwhp. -Mark

Another vote for 400-450rwhp before the pistons/rods give out.

Definitely 400-450 is the limit for the stock rods / pistons. Powered metal for the loose

yeah, same thing goes for the 3v engine but there are also plenty that are still living with higher than 450rwhp numbers. It isnt a perfect world and not all engines are created equal.

The other question is... will 600+ ft/lbs kill my 5 speed automatic?

A member of ModularFords by the name of Ryan98GT is making 545hp/480tq. A friend of mine that is also on ModularFords by the name of Chris00GT is making 530hp/463hp.

As for me, I'm only making 433rwhp but I've gone quicker than both of them in the 1/4. Lol.

Here is a good link to a bunch of guys trying to blow their engines: :)

You should check out Sean Hylands How to build max performance 4.6 book. Alot of information and details about all blocks, rods, pistons, and what the limits are to each. The tune is most important though, for any HP level, as far as any longivity goes.

Amen. I blew the original engine in my car with Vortech's supplied FMU "bandaid". Needless to say, WAY too much timing doesn't go well with hypereutectic pistons.

I picked up a good bit of power just by getting a custom SCT tune.
