Inner tie rod
 

NTB told my wife she needs a new tie rod on the driver's side. The outer one looks fine, I have never been into an inner tie rod. Are these easy to change out? The driver's side does make some funny clunking noise when you're driving it.

They're pretty easy, yea. There's a specially named wrench Ford dealers use to remove them, but most of just call it a pipe wrench ;)

I use a large crescent wrench. It's an easy swap. Just make sure you make a reference before you remove the outer and swap the inner so you can get it close when you put it back together. You'll likely need an alignment to reset the toe unless you happen to have toe-plates and measure it before and then after.

Also, before you go off changing it, verify that it is indeed bad.

Jack the car up in the front on that side of the car. Grab the wheel at the 3 and 9 o'clock position. While pushing with one hand, pull simultaneously with the other hand. Do this back and forth numerous times. If you can fee the wheel "jiggling" when doing this, then yes, the inner is bad. If the wheel is not moving/jiggling, then the tie rods are fine and this is not your problem.

Next, do the same thing but hold the wheel at the 12 and 6 position. You're trying to feel the same sort of movement. If it moves during this step, your ball joint is bad.

If neither "test" results in movement/jiggling of the wheel, it's likely something else is causing your problems.
